I wear an Eddie Bauer down vest inside of a Columbia fall jacket with the heat reflecting stuff. At -20C without major wind, it's just right. Below -10C or if I go indoors without taking it off, I start sweating like crazy. I think I paid less than $100 for each.

I also have a Columbia down winter jacket as well. Paid less than $200 for it a few months ago because discount + circle rewards friends and family discount code + new credit card gave an insane discount on it. But even at full price, it's only around $400-500 ish which is no where near the cost of Canada Goose.

Then pants (long johns, snow pants, fleece lined etc.) are less than $100 easily.

The key to staying warm is easy. Layers. Most people should be able to stay warm up to -25C for less than $500 without too much difficulty.
