I think the true test is to see where you fall on that metric compared to your peers. In that situation, according to Natural Stat Trick, of the 32 goalies who have played the most, Markstrom ranks 26th in goals saved above expected. That means 25 other starting goalies (for the most part) are better than him and helping their team more than he is. Relative to his peers he is much more in the hurting category than the helping category.
Aren't we saying the same thing?

An average goaltender is towards the bottom of starters in the NHL ... right where you have him, and right where he sits in order of goals saved above average.

I'd say the true average for NHL starters would be 10 worst starters or 10 best backups.

That's where he sits right now.
