I think all motorsports have gone past their peak and have shifted so far from a coarse rudimentary machine that relied more on driver ability than tech to win, that there is little that can be done at this point.
I have no doubt MV or LH are better drivers than many of the rest of the field, but if Max and Lando swapped seats I don't think you would see a drastic difference in where their respective cars finish on most days. The teams and designers are winning races now and this means it's only going to get more gimmicky.
There's no road back either, cars are designed to keep a driver safe so in a sport like nascar there is no way to go back to using a stock car as your base. In F1 part of the viability of the sport is the technology advances so it can only move forward. Personally I'd get rid of the hybrid powerplants and go back to pure ICE. No more power saving, kers, boost, multiple power modes. But I'm probably out to lunch, that might just make the fast cars faster and slow cars slower. I do know that I don't want to see what is happening in Indy with one chassis manufacturer and a couple engine choices.
