I was able to remove that fairly easily. Now last night my left eye felt bruised and this morning the eyelid is all puffy, purple, and swollen. It feels like I got a black eye. I rinsed it the best I could in the shower. Is there anything else I should do? I guess it is possible that there is something under the eyelid.

It is very likely something is under the eyelid or that you scratched the surface with some debris. Call up your local Optometrist and get an appointment today if you can. Its generally an easy fix and there is a risk of infection if it is not dealt with right away.
If you are in Alberta the visit will be covered by health care and it will be much quicker to get seen (and managed properly) than with your GP or with Walk in.
