Flames had little choice with Huberdeau and Weegar unless they wanted to take the risk. They literally did that with Gaudreau last year and here we are. Johnny was looking to sign and they couldn’t make a deal so they go into the season and shelve the talks. Johnny has a great year and just can’t resist seeing what the market is and decides to move on. You trade your other superstar because he won’t sign with you and by far the best deal is to get another superstar winger back and a top 4Dman albeit these guys are older than Chucky. The team is all in to compete so flipping these guys at the deadline doesn’t make sense unless the team is completely failing. Now these players are close to free agency and if they have a great year they increase their value and if they have bad years they may want to move on. The fanbase is losing their minds because we see more star players walk for nothing.

When the Gaudreau numbers leaked there was no way you were signing Huberdeau for less considering he is coming off 4 straight seasons over ppg and matched the point totals Johnny just had. Weegar stated before camp that a deal needed to be done before the season or they wouldn’t negotiate during. There is no doubt these deals can look bad soon but at the same point I think Treliving did what he had to do to quiet the noise about people not wanting to stay in Calgary. Having Huberdeau locked up probably helped convince Kadri to come here as well
