Black Label Society
anyone else go to this last night?
They played Mac Hall, got there just after 7pm after witnessing 2 periods of rahter mediocre Flames hockey. The lineup to get in was insane, as it is at most concerts as of late due to the mandatory searches that go on. I have no idea who else was playing there last night (there were tow different shows, two different lineups) but the differences between the two lines was absolutely hilarious. One line of long haired, tatooed and just outright scary looking people and a bunch of 14 year old girls in the other line.
The opener was a band called Strong Arm Down. Not too shabby. They seemed very pleased by the crowd response. I'd never heard them before, but they had some decent riffs.
After an insanely long wait (it was rather aggravating. BLS got on stage at about 10:25pm, SAD left the stage around 9. Standing on concrete that long is not much fun) BLS finally hit the stage. Zakk Wylde is insane on the guitar. The sound was ok, the vocals were somewhat drowned out at times. Some highlights for me were Concrete Jungle, Suicide Messiah, Fire It Up, Bleed For Me and Stillborn. Bummer that they didn't play Blessed Hellride. Had an electric acoustic set where he played the intro to Ozzy's Diary of a Madman, that may have been my favourite part. They also had a nice Dimebag Darrell tribute.
Zakk also seems to have a saliva issue. I can't count how many times he spat in the air or on the crowd, etc. Whatever floats your boat I guess. Looked like the entire Calgary chapter of the Hell's Angel's were up on the side of the stage hanging out with the band, maybe that's why the Calgary Police were out in great numbers.
Not a bad gig, wish they had got on stage a little earlier. I must be getting old as it was hard getting up after less than 5 hours of sleep.
