But as for your question: yes, I expect The Athletic to quote multiple sources to support a claim, or at least attempt to do so. Publications I respect at least put things like, "we attempted to reach out to (source) but they did not respond by the time of publication." And even better, actually amend the article should the source respond.

It's a six year old quote that was established to be 'true' the last go around. If you read any of the The Athletic articles from 2020 they credit the Toledo Blade and the victim's mother. This one was paywalled so not exactly sure what was stated by The Athletic but it's common knowledge on the case at this point and already faced journalistic scrutiny when it was released in 2016. Unless you have reason to believe that the quote isn't real, why are you mad that The Athletic used a confirmed quote by the magistrate?
