This manifests in all sorts of silly ways. My own surname is a relatively common English word, but people want to spell it as if I were German.
My adoptive family is Norwegian if you go back far enough, but they've been using the English spelling for centuries – and the Norwegian spelling isn't anything like the German, either.
Some people prefer it if you say or spell a name wrong because you don't want to sound pedantic. Some people like it if you are pedantic for the sake of getting it right. But if you're going to be both pedantic and wrong, the least you can expect is to be laughed at.
