We had a little cat named "Sam" when I was little, she was quite the outdoorsy sort. Ferocious hunter, she wasn't big, but she brought home all sorts of treats. Bluejays, chickadees, mice, even a small rabbit once if you can believe it.

She was a very protective cat, and was especially wary when she had kittens. There was an Irish Setter who used to run wild pretty much all over the place (we lived on an acreage outside of Sherwood Park) The dog made the mistake of running into our property. Sam waited until it ran past the deck, where she was perched, ready to attack. She landed on the dog's head, and clawed at it mercilessly. As soon as the yelping dog hit the property line, she jumped off and trotted back to the house.

Another time, a friend of my Dad's brought his dogs with him. He opened the door and let them out. Dad said he should keep an eye on them until he put the cat inside. "Oh, they won't hurt the cat" he said. "I'm not worried about the cat" Dad replied. Too late. The poor dog with three legs came running around the corner with Sam attached to his head.
