Last night reminded me a lot of the Gulutzan thru Ward era, and prior:
- They are not moving the puck up ice quickly, instead they are exiting the dzone and moving through the neutral zone as a 5 man unit, in a very plodding manner.
- The opposing D are pinching at will, because there is no threat of speed from the Flames
- The Flames D is not pinching enough, their gaps are huge, and they're giving up two zones without any defensive engagement. And to make it worse, when they DO pinch, they are making bad decisions.
The primary difference between Sutter hockey and the prior regimes, IMO, is the way they play up-tempo, keep gaps tight, and push forward all the time. But right now, that is not happening.
