Back then the game was way more violent, way more emotional, and had a far more colourful cast of characters. The hits and fights were next level. We had Rock em Sockem videos that today would be called “Match penalty and 20 games.” But it was destroying the players.

Take the worst NHL team today and put them up against the 89 Flames and they likely blow them out 20-0. But the 80’s team would make sure they got a few pounds of flesh in the loss.

I still love the game, but I agree, it was way more entertaining to watch. The players seemed so much more invested in the outcome.
I just thought the refs weren't trying to be the stars of the show or managing the game and the players could battle. And holy moly were goalie pads small, no wonder the games were high scoring. That Flames team was a powerhouse!
