TBH I've become increasingly tired of this long form story telling and miss the days of say The X-Files where most episodes were standalone with a bit of mythology added in here and there. Most shows now seem stretched out to fill contractual obligations rather than to the service of the story. Most of the time I can't justify starting a 10 hour show which may end up having multiple seasons, unless it's something I'm really interested in.

You'd think we'd all given up on The Simpsons but when you look at the ratings, someone's still watching the show. It's one of the top-rated shows on FOX still.
I agree about long form storytelling and it's a reason for why I've given up on a lot of the shows that I have. You get so far behind and it just feels daunting to try and catch up. With a family now, I'm lucky to get 30-60 minutes in an evening to watch something so it's not like I can just dedicate a weekend to powering through a season or two of some show that I'm not so sure I'm entertained by anymore.
