With the Hawks and Blues at the time, the Blues let Martin go because they were sure that they were going to get Keenan, who at the time was the prized NHL coach on the market. The Hawks then went and offered Keenan more money, so he went there instead leaving the Blues hooped. Then Chicago hired Martin as an assistant under Keenan.
