Sorry, guys, but I'm with Oil Stain on this one. The PA has lawyers and accountants crawling over every franchise with a microscope, looking for places where the owners might be stashing money. And conversely, the other 31 owners have an interest in seeing that every dollar actually paid to a player is counted towards their 50 percent.

All the arguments I've ever heard for players receiving money under the table amount to variations on, ‘There must be an invisible cat in that chair because you can't actually prove there isn't.’
It’s not Katz stashing HRR somewhere off the books, argument is he’s providing “personal” funds out of any number of his business entities, filtered various ways, to keep Keith (and Smith) whole, never mind a little bonus for helping out the cap.

CFL had those personal services contract, where Ryckman was able to out pay Murray Peszim for Flutie and Gretzky and McNall and Candy were able to pay Raghib Ismail on the side instead of under the CFL cap circa 1992.

This isn’t as blatant but the same result, just for not playing.

Maybe Keith and his whole family now have “long term” complimentary leases on Model D Teslas, paid by some secondary holding company of Katz, and classified as promotional surcharges.

Smith was not hurt, stated he wasn’t hurt, said he wanted to be back, and has been silent since. For such a fiery guy, he wouldn’t have gone quietly unless the reward to effectively end his career, wasn’t well worth it.
