The Chess.com bots (you can use an app on a phone as well) are useful when getting back into it. You can figure out your level, and the bot tendencies are listed, so you can figure out certain weaknesses and tendencies you may have if you can beat a higher numbered bot, but not a lower one (ie: defensive minded, offensive minded, balanced etc.). This is especially more useful once you start playing against the intermediate bots and want to test different types of openers against those bots.

TBH, the more I played on Chess.com, the more I actually wished I knew of a Go equivalent. A few of my chess buddies told me that if I learned Go, they'd buy a really nice Go board set just so that they could play some games.
