The first of four ultramodern air defense systems from Germany has been delivered to Ukraine, the Ukrainian defense minister said — a system valued at 140 million euros ($136 million) that even Germany’s armed forces do not own.

The delivery had been promised for November, but after Russia on Monday launched its biggest aerial assault against targets across Ukraine in months, Germany’s defense minister promised to have it ready sooner.

The system, known as Iris-T SLM, had earlier been promised to Egypt, but Cairo agreed to let Kyiv skip the line. It is designed to protect population centers and other large areas from, aircraft, missile, rocket and drone attacks.
