That's my thought too. I use a torque wrench but the vehicle was 15+ years old when we got it so who knows the history. Of course it's possible I'm one of those idiots you describe who don't use a torque wrench properly but I'm pretty sure I do, and it's only happening on one vehicle.

Could just be dirt or debris in the threads that hardens. I know once I over torqued my lugs on my truck back when I had it and managed to seize 3 bolts total that required a blow torch to make things happen. My recent vehicles have all been lug bolts so I haven't seen issues other then the fun times of lining the wheel up when I can't find the wheel hanger.
