You can’t be Philips’ size and play on the 3rd or 4th line in the NHL, and his offence is not enough of an upgrade over Dube, Tofolli or Coleman to warrant giving up what they also bring the table in terms of checking, defensive play and utility.
Philips is not just small, he’s even small for a small player. At his size, he needs to be enough of an offensive talent that you don’t care about everything else he can’t do… and he just isn’t. It’s weird to have to type this out, but playing against players not good enough to be in the NHL is not the same as playing against players in the NHL.
