I saw Bros over the weekend. I'm a big Billy Eichner fan (I recommend his series Difficult People for anyone that cares) and I was curious to see him in the Judd Apatow treatment.

While there are some stilted scenes and wooden acting at times, it's a classic Apatow tale, who I consider to be the modern day John Hughes. Good amounts of drama mixed in with genuinely clever but sometimes raunchy comedy...all of it strikingly honest and heartfelt. That includes showing very clearly that LGBTQ relationships are not the same as straight ones, but there are some things that are universal. Awkward flirting, dissatisfaction with casual sex despite craving it, fear of intimacy, difficulty with monogamy etc. It feels like a gay version of Trainwreck for most of the film, but there's definitely a uniqueness to it that's worth watching. I think Eichner (who co-wrote this with the director) has brought his clear comedic voice to this, which is equal parts acerbic and cautiously hopeful.

It's a good film, but it won't blow you away. Still a strong recommendation overall to watch.

Just a warning for anyone who might be squeamish watching men make out...there's a lot of it, and some scenes are very sexually suggestive, but nothing graphic.
