The only thing giving lots of breathing room to it is:
A) he's losing the war and has no allies left. There's literally nothing to gain for China by helping as the war and Putin are pretty much lost. The first 2 world wars had distinct sides. This is Russia vs everyone and they're already losing. Outside of nukes, Russia has no more tricks up it's sleeve. I can't see China taking Russia's side after a nuke, so I'm not sure there's anything that can change the trajectory here
B) some say ww3 has been going on for a while now (Fiona Hill specifically) but it's a global influence game and not a body bag game now. If this is the case, this seems to point to the burning out of one of the West's enemies.
