For sure. But he was a useful player for them for a few years and did well in the playoffs for them. He could play up and down the lineup, was a tenacious forechecker, and, for a time, was easily one of the fastest players in the game. The players the flames kept at the cost of waiving Byron were all gone within a year or so (Bollig, Raymond, Ortio). Not trying to make a big deal out of it… he’s just an example of a player that at the time I definitely did not want to lose on the waiver wire in place of those guys.
It’s tough this season cause I feel the same way about virtually most of the players that are waiver eligible this year… speaks to the depth of the organization. Only so many spots available so it’s inevitable that some quality players will have to pass through waivers. Hopefully the timing is right and the waiver wire is busy enough that none of them are claimed.
