I bought Gorilla tape which is supposed to hold better. Will it stay in place given the heat? If not, would it work if I put something under the tape to insulate it. Any ideas appreciated.

You can buy aluminum tape (available at any hardware store) specifically designed for duct work, pretty much like thin aluminum foil with an adhesive layer. It works great for covering up such holes and will not come off.
