I literally said three things:
  • If he was bigger and heavier, he'd be Datsyuk 2.0.
  • He's very, very good defensively for his size.
  • Because of his size he's forced to use his speed and stick instead of his body.

Things I literally did not say:
  • He's Datsyuk 2.0.
  • He's very, very good defensively. Period.
  • His size should be ignored when discussing his defensive capabilities, and should therefore be compared to players like Barkov and Bergeron (who do not suffer the drawback of being 4-6 inches shorter and 40-60 lbs lighter than they people they play against).

Edit: To clarify further... I think of Datsyuk and Gaudreau as being equal in terms of skill, creativity, vision and defensive stickwork. Datsyuk, while certainly not a giant, was at least big enough to not be the physical equivalent of a mosquito. I believe that Johnny has the same hockey brain as Datsyuk and would be a generational talent and the best player in the NHL right now, if he was a few inches taller and at least 20lbs heavier.
