And considering I am acquainted with a number of Russians who live in Calgary and have lived here for 20 years, and they fully believe Russia is winning, I expect option 2 to be the only natural progression.

How do they fully believe Russia is winning? I guess maybe they only read Telegram or Rybar or something but you’d have to be pretty stupid to not look at more information sources.
