Romney and McCain were actually never really the "Antichrist" - in 2008, the boat anchor was still George Bush and McCain's whole thing was to try to differentiate himself from that legacy by being a "Maverick", whatever that means.

The tactics against Romney were pretty standard, "Richy rich Republican doesn't care about the common man, doesn't know how the other half lives, look at this video from a fundraiser where he basically calls 47% of American gutter trash, har har binders full of women har har". One thing I recall from that campaign was Romney being openly mocked for suggesting that Russia was a major antagonist for the USA, to a point where Obama laughed at him in a debate for being out of touch with modern reality... whoops!

DeSantis is a prick, and he's basically getting the same treatment that Ted Cruz got last time around - i.e., better than Trump, but still an absolute prick who no one should want anywhere near the top of a Presidential ticket. I don't think there's anyone who's honestly suggesting he's preferable to Trump or that Trump was "not that bad".
