Of course they would have prepped him, and yes, it was probably handled ineptly. But at the end of the day, he is a weak and nervous speaker and it's pretty easy to screw up, even if you are prepared.



Look at Virtanen a couple days ago. He was clearly prepped, and had all the 'answers' ready. But he was completely unable to actually connect those phrases into any kind of articulate sentences. He just kept blurting phrases over and over.



Replying to reporters, in front of a camera, is not easy. And hockey players aren't exactly well schooled, for the most part.
And this was a guy who is historically much better and more comfortable in the media than Gaudreau. The NHL posted draft interviews in 2013, and Virtanen came across very strong. I remember clearly that he impressed a lot of posters here, myself included.
