Not sure what the difference is between a rec league and an open league.
I was invited to join a team of friends who were curlers. You signed up as a team, and a schedule is made up. I think there were A and B groupings (A were more experienced teams, B were all levels. Top team in B gets moved up to A and bottom team in A gets moved down to B the following year). I think if people didn't have a team, they would group you together into a new team (or add you to existing teams).
