There are different ways to interpret this quote. I don't think Johnny is the best communicator, but he has always seemed genuine to me. I take the quote to mean that he finally decided it was best to play in the States (likely due to border issues during Covid/when his dad was sick). That meant that he was not coming back to Calgary. Unfortunately, the way he phrased it, it just sounds like he didn't like playing in Calgary and wanted to leave instead of him wanting to be closer (and have easier access) to family.
To me, the quote as you've interpreted it is overly harsh, and not characteristic of how Johnny talks. Again, just my opinion.
