But is anything in the real world measured by decimeters? I can't say I have ever seen it used to measure anything, and if someone told me the length of something in decimeters, I would probably be confused.
Is there a practical application where decimeters make sense? I thought about this because we just bought school supplies for my 7 year old and her ruler has it shown.

I don't know about practical applications but my parents are Eastern European and whenever we went to the Polish deli/butcher they would order in 10s of gram, deka. I'm not sure why it is a common standard of measurement there.
