This team is good enough to challenge for the division as it stands right now. I’d rather use a larger amount of space at the deadline than fill the role now personally.

Maybe. But by the deadline there are more teams willing to take on dead cap because their seasons didn't pan out - right now it's basically just Arizona.
And I think right now you're getting that 3-4 million dollar player for 2 million. Pre-covid, Rodrigues probably gets a Matt Belesky type of deal out of someone (and of course at that price or anything like it, I would balk). Bargain bin shopping at the end of free agency has become one of the best uses of cap space during this post-Covid-cap-crunch period. You can get really efficient, short term deals if you just wait and clean up the scraps, even waiting for PTOs. Zach Aston Reese should cost someone $2.5-3 million for multiple seasons, and he might sign for something around 1. Kessel is going to score 50 points or something and cost no money. Then there's the added benefit of having that player in the lineup right from camp (which I hope we're about to see the benefit of re: Tyler Toffoli).
I understand where you're coming from, but personally I'd rather spend the money now, if you can get one of the half dozen or so bargain guys out there.
