That reminds me of some dumb kid room mate I had once who got his pay cheque one weekend, went out and spend $300 at the bar, and $180 of it was tips one night. Sure enough he comes to me on Monday asking to borrow $50 because he's got no food. I suggested he go find out if those waitresses remembered who he is and see if they'd lend him the money.
I'm not advocating being a cheap tipper....but I've seen guys waste so much money tipping waitresses thinking that was going to impress them and get them a date or more right after their shift. I doubt guys like Gates and Buffet ever did that no matter how nerdy they are.
