I had the same thought. There are many parallels between first seasons but as far as the royal hunts, HotD did much better job.
There's just something rich in that scene about the emasculating feel of them roping up the stag, and walking Viserys through where to puncture the animal and then applauding him for killing it poorly that really epitomizes the degradation of his state and former glory to this now troubled King in his twilight that has lost control of everything around him including his offspring.
The care they put into the episode really does harken back to the glory days of Game of Thrones and i love that.
The battle on the other hand was a little more reminiscent of later seasons, where things would get built up only to take a quick exit and leave key moments off screen (Daemon slaying the crabfeeder).
Nevertheless, the last third of the episode was still entertaining TV.
