I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that, his work compatriot mentioned this desire in passing during the course of the season.
Perhaps at the gym, perhaps at the buffet table or restaurant, perhaps even in the locker-room.
These guys see each other more than they see their wives.
At the very least I'd consider is plausible that he knew this. My only reservation is that such a demand is so insane that I wonder if it was a joke or a misunderstanding.
A player demanding a Captaincy as a contractual obligation? If I'm a GM there is zero fataing way I say 'yes' to that. None. Hard No.
Sorry, you want to be the Captain? Earn it. Step up and earn it. No? And thats a sticking point? Buh-bye.
Chucky wont be a Captain in Florida either.
He just doesnt have what it takes. I've said this in the past, Tkachuk strikes me as a Mercenary. He comes from a Professional Hockey Family. He will do exactly what you pay him to do. Thats it. There is nothing wrong with that, but conversely, you dont get extras if thats your attitude either.
You want to be 'Captain for Life?' There is value to that. Your $9.5M is now $9. No? Buh-Bye.
Contractually appointed Captains dont inspire people. There isnt another level there.
He's a good player, but if he's not invested then he's just another piece on the board.
