It seems to depend a lot on the theater and movie. My wife and I regularly go to the 21&over theater with seats spaced out quite a bit, and rarely have an issue.
Taking my teenage kids to a movie with a lot of other younger people, and it's usually a mess.
I probably average going to about 10 movies a year, as I have for a while, but I find I rarely watch a movie at home any more even with a decent set up. Streaming series are just way better suited for at home watching.
If movie theaters die out, I would guess that feature films in general will start dying out as well.
