Steffi was the Serena of her time (well, that is until Monica Seles came on the scene). She hit the ball with much more pace then her contemporaries and quite literary blew them off the court. Obviously, her career was highlighted by winning the golden slam in 1988. Monica Seles arrived though in 1989 and she quickly ascended to being the top player on tour and won a bunch of grand slams in the early 90's. That crazed Graf fan in Germany stabbed Seles in the back in the tourney in Hamburg in 1993 and although Seles attempted a comeback a couple of years later, she was never again the same player.

It would have been very interesting to see how many slams Seles would have won if not for the stabbing incident, I don't think high teens or even hitting 20 would have been out of the question.
