I just dont't think the Flames will move on from any of their top 6 D unless someone offers them something too good to pass up.
I do think they move Valimaki to a team with room in their top 7 or 8 D, in exchange for a forward that has similarly under-performed.
What I think the Flames are missing is a RHS RW. Any available on the market that might fit under the cap? Kessel? Rodrigues is a RHS too. There might be more, but i didn't want to go searching for the next hour. Those are the two that I would consider for the top 6 anyway. Toffoli - Kessel isn't a bad way to go at all considering you have Huberdeau - Mangiapane on the opposite side, and Lindholm - Kadri down the middle. That's a pretty good top 6.
Pushes Dube and Coleman down to the 3rd line with Backlund (most probably - depending on chemistry and so on), which would make for a very good 3rd line.
Looking through the Flames prospects (and ignoring Coronato who is going back to the NCAA), Phillips, Duehr, Tuulola... definitely a lack of RHS in the organization. Phillips I doubt will get too long of a look, Duehr would be a good option for the 4th line only, Tuulola doesn't seem like a player to me right now, but maybe he takes a step forward again in Finland. Either way, there aren't any RHS prospects ready to make the jump (though I am sure some of you will argue on Phillips).
I think signing Kessel or Rodrigues would be the shrewd move depending on cap space, unless you can get a RHS young player stuck behind the depth charts on some other team for Valimaki. Pens fans seem to think that Rodrigues is quite useless when not in the top 6. His shooting percentage last year was 7.8 - seemed to be in-line (on the low side, but not too low) from his average, and though he is a centre, his FO stats are awful, and up until this season, he has never hit double-digits in goals, even though he is 29 year old. I think my target would be Kessel at this point, but only if I could fit him under the cap and if Sutter wants him, and leave Rorigues to Vancouver. Seems like a guy that is going to get an over-payment to me, though he has lasted this long on the open market.
Otherwise, I am fine with the way things are. Pelletier, Ruzicka, even maybe Phillips can all take a look on the third line with Backlund and Coleman and see if there is a fit without signing anyone.
