Sound direction is key - you want to give advance warning.

I often hike/backpack solo and use music/podcasts at times (especially uphill grinds where it can be harder to shout and/or maintain full bear-awareness.

I'm rarely on busy trails, but when I do encounter other people, I turn the volume waaaaaaaay down/off. It's not that hard.


Also, music is less effective than voices (for bears with any human experience). Maybe spoken word music is the sweetspot.
