I feel mostly the same. I don't care what happens 4 years. I am 100% fine with going through a rebuild when the time comes, and dealing with ugly deals.
What I haven't been fine with is the lack of playoff success. I don't think it would be fair to call Treliving a failure for not winning the cup - many great teams don't win cups simply because it is an incredibly difficult thing to do. No shame in not winning the cup, and I won't hold it against him.
However, repeating patterns of "Did not qualify" followed by "Bounced in the first round" and a once in an 8 year cycle of making it to the 2nd round to win only a single game - that's not success.
Treliving should be lauded for salvaging this season. He has kept the Flames as contenders under the most trying of circumstances. That's outstanding management on his part, truly. If the Flames have a successful year (which I bet they will), the Jim Gregory (GM of the year) should be his.
I just think at some point, to be thought of as a successful GM, you need to build a team that has actual playoff success. If the Flames win a cup, I will accept 8 years of wandering in the desert after as a penance. That's fine. I enjoy watching kids develop and find a lot of entertainment value in that. I don't care about the bad contracts.
I am lucky enough to remember (though not appreciate it enough at the time) when the Flames won the cup in '89. In hindsight, I will gladly welcome "Young Guns 2" if it meant a cup.
I am even ok with one cup final, and having to rebuild. Flames contended, and I still have vivid (and appreciative) memories of that cup run. It was awesome. Wandering the desert makes it worth it even for that.
Heck, just a couple of 'runs' (conference finals) will make me happy (as long as no more losses to the Oilers please!). That's exciting.
Flames have had memorable and exciting regular seasons, and that Dallas series was edge-of-the-seat stuff that I honestly think I will cherish longer than I thought I would. I need more of those memories. I need more playoff series wins, not regular season accolades.
Don't get me wrong - Treliving deserves to be lauded for his moves. Once again, he has pulled off magic this off-season. I was expecting a rebuild and I was ok with that. This is obviously better. But in terms of Treliving being thought of as a successful GM, he needs to have success in the playoffs. I am happy to exchange assets and years of poor contracts to get it. It is hard to build a dynasty in the cap era now anyway - it was hard out of the cap era as it was.
