In isolation, I don't like this deal. I don't think it's great value. But for the situation the team was in today, and for the games we'll play next season, this is the best move Treliving could've made. And the pressure this will put on our cap space, well, that's a problem for future Brad. But I think we owe it to him to have confidence that he can handle it.
Sofa GM SebC might've liked to hang on to a first round pick, ride out Monahan's contract, and maybe take a shot at MacKinnon in a year. But sofa GM SebC doesn't have real consequences if MacKinnon doesn't make it to market, or does but goes somewhere else. Sofa GM SebC deals with hypotheticals that will never be proven right or wrong. Brad Treliving deals with the real team, and perhaps does not have the luxury of passing on a player to hope that he gets a better one with his cap space next year.
And if his real team wins the Cup, and I certainly think this team is good enough to win a Stanley Cup, Brad Treliving will have absolute vindication over the naysayers, and the doubts of approvers. Then the problem will be how to get him to consent to a statue of his balls outside the new arena.

Either that or we have a Huberdeau-Kadri-Lindholm top line.
