If I were trading a 1st, my conditions would be relatively simple:
Top 2 protected in perpetuity. But every time it is deferred we owe a 3rd rd pick*
If pick ends up 3-6OA, the receiving team sends back a 2nd*.
If pick ends up 7-12OA, the receiving team sends back 3rd*
If pick ends up 13-20, the pick alone is transferred
If pick ends up 21-32, then we owe a 3rd rd pick*, too
* For simplicity, each of these additional picks would be "the earliest available pick of that rd within 3 years"...so teams wouldn't be stuck with additional conditions on those picks.
Still complicated, but the point is to insure each side against the extremes. The typical condition of: 'Top 10 protection for 1 yr then totally unprotected' is lazy and crazy to me (it's gotta be pretty rare for a team to dip into the top 10 for just 1 year)
