I’m not sure id want to trade a 1st for 7 years of Kadri at $7M to be honest.

The whole point of overpaying a UFA is there is no acquisition cost, giving up a 1st kind of defeats that point.

The opportunity cost of a 1st is huge and I think it probably could have been used more effectively for a different asset.
These moves though, allow the Flames to maximize competing this year when Huberdeau and Weegar are on steal on contracts. If you don't make this deal and you keep the first and wait until Monahan contracts expires you also lose the opportunity to put forward an even better team this year which could be our best chance of winning it all in a long time.

I also think with all the conditions and likely the first in a 2025 first you could make it case those conditions are better than trading a 2nd in this draft to ditch Monahan as the 2023 draft is very deep and it's a prospect added to the pool 2 years earlier. If it is a 2024 first it's automatically 20th overall or later. Seeing how teams value picks now over picks down the road I wouldn't be shocked if our first is 20th overall or later that Montreal takes it and doesn't worry about a slightly better pick in 2025.

A late first is pretty overrated pick. It's quite often mentioned in previous trade idea involving players we were looking to trade away.
