The more I look at NYI...the more I think CGY/NYI deal surrounding Hanifin and Barzal may make some sense.
We know Lou is defence first. If they acquire Hanifin, their top-4 is Hanifin, Dobson, Pulock, and Pelech with Sorokin in net. That's probably the best positioned defence/goaltending in the league.
The trade would also allow them to gain $2.05M in cap-space this year - and then with signing Kadri, it locks them in to Kadri + Nelson as their top-six centres for probably a combined $13M 0 $13.5M, whereas Barzal's qualifying offer next summer is $10M.
Calgary also just acquired Weegar, and while having a ridiculous amount of depth on the blue line is important - if you can address a lack of centre depth and still maintain very good depth on the blue line? Well, you do it.
To NYI: Noah Hanifin, 2023 2nd round pick, 2024 3rd round pick
To CGY: Mathew Barzal
I don't think that's a crazy idea.
