If you score the most goals in a season in franchise history, then captain the team to 2 finals in 3 years, and win a cup, your number gets retired. If you are the best goalie in franchise history to that point, and also go to the finals twice in 3 years, winning once as arguably the MVP, again, no brainer.

If you are arguably the best player in the league and captain your team to within a goal of the Stanley Cup, and are an even better person throughout, you deserve it.
