Matty did it right. Next day had a video tribute for Calgary. Apparently that isn't hard to do.
Gaudreau just focused on excusing himself & justifying his poor decision. Not much that came across as heartfelt for his former team and city.

At the end of the day this is hockey and tribalism.
Players get and market themselves as heroes
Matthew also made smart strategic moves to keep his image when he left.
Johnny didn’t and even perhaps acted in bad faith towards the flames (and due to tribalism, therefore bad faith to all us fans)
This tribalism is partly why their career as sports players exists and they get paid gobs of money.
It’s also why it’s ok to boo any player you don’t like for any reason when they get on the ice.
