Im not sure that is true.
Yes he surprised many with his performance at times earlier in the season, but the last quarter of the season and in the playoffs, he was flat out invisible.
Im not sure if that was due to him slowing down after the grind of the year, or if he was nursing something that limited him or the increase of game intensity. Likely some of all those things, but in no way was he anywhere near a 3.75M dollar player. He was a liability in fact. 3 pts in his last regular season 23 games, a minus player, and his skating slowed noticeably, which was hard to do.
In the playoffs he was the worst Flames forward bar none and was given ice time accordingly.
I think he is done entirely, so if the Flames can move him it's addition by subtraction for his hockey ability. No one can replace the toughness factor he could bring but even that was hard to spot down the stretch and into the post season. So to get someone to eat that with "just retention" and a team he would waive for, is going to be very difficult IMO. Particularly this year where there just isnt much cap room among the large majority of teams.
