O’Toole was right about one thing - the Conservatives need to ask themselves if they want to be a party that can win a federal election, or if they want to be the NDP of the right.
20 per cent or so of Canadians have been sucked into MAGA-style populism, and suffer from a delusion that they can carry out a successful overthrow of Canada’s institutions. They can’t. But they are numerous and motivated enough to take over the federal Conservatives and make them unelectable.
The best thing that could happen to Canadian politics is for the PPC to gain enough prominence that the nutbars are drawn to them, leaving the Conservatives to stake out the centre-right without scaring the normies. Pretty tough for that to happen with first-past-the-post, though.
