This is probably my favourite thing about Tree. He doesn't seem to believe in creating new holes to fill current holes. It's kinda like that wise man FanIn80 once said... "if you have a hole in the ground, is digging a new hole right beside it the best way to fill it in?" Even worse, "if you have a hole in the ground, do you really want to dig a brand new hole right beside it, just to end up with two holes and a surplus pile of dirt that can't be used to fill either of them?"

I think the question might be whether there is a sufficient surplus at D to subtract? Including Weegar, I'd say we have four top-3 D-men, OK/Z are 4/5s, and then several 6/7 guys. Subtract 1 by trade and another by injury and it would suck, but still be manageable enough I think (and you can bolster a middle pair guy at TDL if necessary).
IMO 2/3C is the biggest hole short and long-term. Monahan/Ruzicka/Zary/Dubé/Rooney is already a bit of a hodge-podge for the bottom 6 C's. If any true C gets hurt (especially Lindy/Backlund) then we are in real trouble. Adding a Stastny or Rodrigues to that list would help, but if we could actually fill that 2/3C hole well then it's worth deep consideration.
Hanifin is secured for 2 more years at a nice number...I'm not sure how I'd feel about extending him at 6.5-7.5 though.
