In whiteouts defense, prior to this season and seeing how Saul and Kim left things, there were lots of theories floating around about Gene being in Omaha and Kim originally being from that part of the country and maybe that was a connection.
Even as recent as 2 episodes ago, one could hope that Gene reaching out to Kim in that phone booth would have been the necessary turning point to save the relationship. There was tons of speculation about who the phone call would be with since it was initially referenced.
With that said, I think I am happy it didn't go that direction as it may not have been true to the story or the characters. But it is also in a way hard to square the characters as they are now to what they were early on. For such a long time Jimmy was the rule breaker that operated in moral and legal gray areas, but Saul and especially now Gene, are just bad.
So then you start to question whether you even hope for a happy ending. And then enter into the equation of even if we as fans have an idea of what we think would be a solid ending, that the creators of the show have shown time and time again they can subvert expectations and go a totally different way. (usually in a satisfying manner) That to me is what has been so exciting about these last 4 episodes, they have been so uncharted as a fan. (did call that Carol Burnett using the computer to find Saul though!)
