I think it’s a win-win at this point. Florida was likely not going to be able to keep both players beyond this season. They got a younger star player for his whole prime, so not much risk there. They also added an element that their team was lacking.
The Flames got two older star players that likely have fewer prime years left. In total, the Flames got 5-10 star player prime years split between two players, and Florida got a guarantee of 8 star player prime years with one player. The exact number of prime years the Flames get depends on if Weegar signs and when the players, drop off, so it isn’t easy to nail down.
The Flames also assumed the risk of having one of them walk or becoming back half anchor. But we also got a 1st rounder and decent prospect to make up for the risk.
Honestly, both teams should be happy at this point. The ultimate decider will be how the next decade plays out for both teams.
As a side, if we are being honest, neither Hunerdeau or Tkachuk are likely going to get over 100 points next season. It’s just an incredibly hard thing to do once let alone repeating. Huberdeau probably falls back to the 90s and Tkachuk to a PPG rate or slightly lower. I do think Hunerdreau is the kind of player to make his line mates better though. Tkachuk is no slouch either when it comes to playmaking, but I think the Flames win the vicarious point distribution gains with Hunerdeau.
