We're probably going to disagree, but
I don't see Huberdeau as a true superstar, regardless of point totals. I don't think having him, on the wrong side of 30, as your team's best player is a recipe for success.
I also don't really agree with "teams with good but not great players don't win anything". The Blues won the cup with a bunch of good players but no superstars a couple of years ago. The Stars made the finals that way (you can argue Heiskanen but he was basically a rookie then). Vegas has been that team pretty much every year since they entered the league, and other than last year when they were decimated by injuries have always been a threat. I'll leave out Montreal on the basis that that was probably a fluke, but others have argued that their run was basically them being built for the postseason in the same way the Blues were. I'd also argue that the Kings at this point don't really have any superstars, as their biggest names are past their prime, but I really like the way that team is built.
Like I say, I'd prefer to allocate that some of that space to Mangiapane for longer term (even if it brings his AAV into the 7s) and spend some of it on Weegar. At the end of the day, you have only so much cap to throw around. It's really puzzling to me that scoring wingers have so little market value in trades and yet are still commanding this type of money when you want to sign them. I would simply not want to be in the Jonathan Huberdeau business if this is what it costs.
